The 9-Prefix Rule

Converting any conventional PLU code to its organic equivalent is simple: add a 9 in front.

4011

Conventional Banana

4-digit code = conventionally grown

94011

Organic Banana

9 + 4011 = certified organic

84011

GMO Banana (rare)

8-prefix = genetically modified (rarely used)

Key Points About Organic PLU Codes

  • Organic codes are always 5 digits, starting with 9
  • The remaining 4 digits match the conventional PLU code
  • Only certified organic produce should use the 9-prefix
  • The USDA Organic seal should appear on organic produce labels
  • Organic codes are managed by IFPS, same as conventional codes

The 9-prefix code tells the POS system the item is organic and prices it accordingly.

USDA Organic Seal

The visual seal communicates organic status to consumers browsing the produce aisle.

Certifying Agency

Some retailers require the certifying agency name and certificate number on the label.
