Protective Packaging: Buying Guide
Four Ways Products Get Damaged in Shipping
Most damage comes from four sources: impact when a box is dropped, vibration over long routes, compression from stacked loads and movement inside the box. Good protective packaging addresses all four rather than just adding padding.
Cushioning absorbs impact, void fill eliminates movement, rigid inserts and dividers prevent contact between items and edge protection handles compression on pallets.
Matching Material to Product
Glass and ceramics need cushioning on every side and dividers so items cannot touch. Electronics benefit from anti-static materials and snug-fitting foam. Heavy items need rigid blocking and bracing in addition to cushion. Soft goods usually need only a mailer and light fill.
A useful rule: shake the packed box. If anything shifts or rattles, it needs more fill. We can recommend a combination for your product.
Sustainable Options
Paper-based void fill and corrugated inserts are accepted in most curbside recycling. Reducing the box size also cuts fill needed and freight cost. Tell us your sustainability goals and we will quote options that fit.
Protective Packaging FAQ
How do I choose between bubble wrap and paper void fill?
Bubble wrap cushions and wraps individual items. Paper void fill fills extra space so items cannot move. Many shippers use both: wrap the item, then fill the gaps.
What size bubble wrap should I buy?
Smaller bubbles (3/16 inch) wrap surfaces and light items. Larger bubbles (1/2 inch) give more cushioning for heavier or more fragile goods.
Is paper void fill recyclable?
Kraft paper is widely recyclable with cardboard, which is why many shippers prefer it for customer-facing packages.
Do you quote corner protectors for pallets?
Yes. Tell us your load size and how you strap or wrap it and we will quote corner boards and edge protectors.
