What Retailers Require on PLU Labels

Requirements vary by retailer, but most major grocery chains and supermarkets expect some combination of the following elements on produce labels. Here's what to know before you order.

PLU Code (Required by Most)

Required

The 4 or 5-digit IFPS PLU code is the baseline requirement. It must be accurate for the specific variety — not just the general produce type. For example, Gala apples (4129) and Fuji apples (4131) have different codes.

GS1 Barcode (Required by Many Chains)

Required

Major chains including Walmart, Kroger, and Whole Foods increasingly require a GS1-standard barcode (EAN-13 or UPC-A) for self-checkout scanning. This requires a GS1 company prefix and DataBar registration.

Country of Origin (Required by Law)

Required

COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) regulations require that imported produce display the country of origin. This can be printed directly on the PLU label.

Organic Certification (Required for Organic)

Required

Certified organic produce must display the USDA Organic seal and use the correct 9-prefix PLU code. Some retailers also require the certifying agency name.

Brand Logo (Preferred by Premium Retailers)

Optional

While not universally required, branded PLU labels are preferred by premium and specialty retailers. A recognizable brand logo increases shelf appeal and consumer trust.

Variety Name (Preferred for Specialty Produce)

Optional

For specialty and premium varieties (heirloom tomatoes, specialty apples, etc.), displaying the variety name on the label helps consumers identify and seek out the product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are PLU labels legally required?

PLU labels are not legally required by federal law, but most major retailers require them for self-checkout systems. Country of origin labeling (COOL) is legally required for imported produce.

Do I need a GS1 barcode on my PLU label?

It depends on your retail accounts. Many major chains now require GS1 barcodes. We recommend getting a GS1 prefix if you're targeting national or regional grocery chains.

What happens if my PLU label doesn't meet retailer requirements?

Retailers may reject your produce shipment or require relabeling at your expense. Getting the label right before delivery is critical.

Can you help me meet specific retailer requirements?

Yes. We work with growers and packers to create PLU labels that meet the specific requirements of their retail accounts. Contact us with your retailer's spec sheet.

How do I find out what my specific retailer requires?

Ask your retail buyer for their produce label specification sheet. Most major chains have documented requirements they share with suppliers.
