Packaging Supplies for Packing Houses: What to Stock Before Peak Season
· 6 min read · By Rob Puzio

Peak season does not forgive a missing supply. When the line is running, a pallet of boxes that never arrived or a roll of film that ran out mid-shift costs you more than any discount saved. The fix is a plan, made before harvest, not during it. This checklist covers the packaging supplies a packing house needs, how to work out quantities, and how to order without chasing five suppliers.
Step 1: Know your three numbers
Buying packaging well is mostly about knowing your numbers. Before you request pricing, work out:
Those three figures drive most of your film, tape and box spend, and they let a supplier quote the right quantities instead of a guess. Use last season's peak month as your starting point, then adjust for expected growth.
- How many pallets you wrap each month
- How many cartons you seal each month
- How many boxes you ship each month
Step 2: Standardize your specs
Every extra size, gauge and color adds cost and complexity. Standardizing on a few box sizes, one or two film gauges and a single tape spec lets you buy in larger quantities, which is where real savings come from. It also cuts the chance of someone grabbing the wrong supply on a busy dock.
Step 3: Walk the line and list everything
Follow the product from field to truck and note every supply it touches.
Labels
Labels are custom to your product, so get them ordered and proofed first. We make them in-house in Florida, with rush as fast as 48 hours, but planning ahead keeps you off the rush list.
Boxes
Poly bags and liners
Stretch film
Strapping and containment
Tape
Protective packaging and shipping supplies
Safety and facility supplies
These are the items nobody thinks about until they run out in the middle of the busiest week of the year.
- PLU labels and fruit stickers with FDA-approved direct food contact adhesive
- Custom product labels
- Barcode labels (UPC, GS1 and DataBar)
- Label applicators, electric or manual
- Corrugated produce boxes in the right strength for your stack height
- Wax-treated or coated boxes if product is cooled or stored wet
- Vented or handhold styles if needed
- Dividers and pads
- Liners and bags to protect product inside the box
- Hand or machine film, in your standard gauge and width
- Enough rolls for peak daily pallet count
- Strapping, buckles or seals, and tools
- Corner boards for tall or heavy loads
- Carton sealing tape in your standard spec
- Dispensers or tape guns
- Corner protection, void fill and cushioning as needed
- Shipping essentials if you ship smaller orders
- Safety supplies such as PPE, hi-vis apparel, floor marking and first aid
- Janitorial, breakroom and warehouse maintenance supplies
Step 4: Compare total cost, not just price per roll
The cheapest roll is not always the cheapest pallet of finished product. Factor in how much film it takes to hold a load, how often rolls are changed, how much tape is wasted, and what a damaged shipment costs. A supply that fails in transit costs far more than the savings.
Step 5: Order with lead time in mind
Work backward from your first packing day:
- Confirm quantities and specs
- Request quotes for everything in one go
- Place labels and custom or printed items first
- Leave buffer for delivery and a quick check of what arrived
- Keep a small safety stock of the items that stop the line when they run out
Takeaway checklist: pre-season audit
