How to Choose the Right Stretch Film for Pallet Wrapping (Hand vs. Machine)

The right stretch film keeps loads tight, stable, and damage-free from dock to delivery.

Pick the wrong stretch film and you either burn through rolls or watch loads shift in transit. The good news: choosing right comes down to four things: how you wrap, how heavy the load is, how long the film must hold, and what your pallets look like.

Hand Stretch Film vs. Machine Stretch Film

Hand film is lighter, comes on a smaller core, and is made to be wrapped by a person walking around the pallet. Machine film comes on a larger, heavier roll and runs on a turntable or rotary-arm wrapper, which stretches it much further for the same coverage.

  • Hand film: best for under roughly 15 to 20 pallets a day, mixed loads, and tight spaces.
  • Machine film: best for steady daily volume. It stretches farther, so each roll wraps more pallets.
  • Pre-stretched film: a hand-wrap option that is already stretched at the factory, so it is easier on workers and uses less film per pallet.

Understand Gauge: Thicker Is Not Always Better

Gauge is film thickness. Hand film commonly runs 60 to 90 gauge; machine film often runs 50 to 80 gauge. Modern high-performance films are thinner but stronger, so a lower gauge can still hold a heavy load if the film is built to stretch and recover.

If you are wrapping uniform, stable boxes, a thinner film is usually enough. For heavy, uneven, or sharp-cornered loads, step up in gauge or choose a puncture-resistant film.

Match Film Width and Core Size to Your Pallets

Most hand film is 18 inches wide and most machine film is 20 inches wide. Wider rolls such as 30 inches can wrap tall or oddly shaped loads in fewer passes. Check that the core size fits your dispenser or machine before you order.

  • Standard 40 x 48 inch pallet: 18 or 20 inch film is the usual choice.
  • Tall or irregular loads: consider wider film to cut down on wrapping passes.
  • Always confirm core diameter matches your hand dispenser or wrapper.

Pick the Right Type for Your Product

  • Clear cast film: quiet, clear, and good for scanning barcodes through the wrap.
  • Blown film: tougher and more cling for irregular loads.
  • Colored film: blocks light or marks lots by department, shift, or customer.
  • UV-resistant film: for loads stored outside in the Florida sun.
  • Vented film: lets produce and other fresh goods breathe on the pallet.

Wrapping Tips That Cut Film Costs

  • Anchor the film to the pallet base, then wrap bottom to top with about 50 percent overlap.
  • Finish with two or three tight wraps at the base, where the load is most likely to shift.
  • Use a hand dispenser or pre-stretched film to reduce worker fatigue and film waste.
  • Track film use per pallet. A small change in technique can cut spending noticeably.

Don't Forget the Label on the Pallet

A wrapped pallet still needs to be identified. Clear, scannable shipping and barcode labels keep loads moving through receiving without a hand count. We make custom labels in-house in Florida, and we also supply packaging and shipping supplies so you can order both in one place.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pallets does one roll of stretch film wrap?

It depends on the film, stretch level, and load. A roll of machine film typically wraps many more pallets than a roll of hand film because it stretches further.

Is pre-stretched film worth it?

Often yes. It is lighter, easier to apply by hand, and generally uses less film per pallet, which can lower total cost even when the roll price is higher.

Can I use hand film in a machine wrapper?

Not usually. Machine film is made for the higher stretch and tension of a wrapper and comes on a different core. Use the film type your equipment calls for.
