Acrylic vs. Hot Melt Tape: Which to Use on Produce Cartons

· 6 min read · By Rob Puzio

Carton sealing tape on produce cartons
Pick the tape to match your cartons and your storage conditions.

Tape is a small cost that causes big problems when it fails. A carton that pops open in transit means damaged product, a claim and an unhappy customer. Most tape failures come down to one decision: the adhesive. Here is how acrylic and hot melt compare, and how to choose for produce cartons that spend time in coolers.

The short answer

If your cartons go into a cooler, that last point matters.

  • Acrylic is the workhorse. It handles heat and cold, resists yellowing and stays bonded in long storage. For most shippers, and for most cold-storage produce, start here.
  • Hot melt grabs fast. It has high initial tack, which helps on recycled or dusty cartons and on fast application lines. But it can degrade in cold or very hot conditions.

Acrylic tape: when it fits

Acrylic carton sealing tape is clear, quiet to unroll and stable over time. It holds well across temperature changes.

Choose acrylic when:

  • Cartons move between warm packing areas and cold storage
  • Cartons sit in storage for a long time
  • You want tape that stays clear and does not yellow
  • Noise at the packing station is a concern

Hot melt tape: when it fits

Hot melt has aggressive tack and bonds quickly. That makes it a good fit when the carton surface is the problem.

Choose hot melt when:

Keep in mind that hot melt can yellow over time and may not hold up in cold or very hot conditions.

  • Cartons are recycled or dusty
  • You need fast application and instant grab
  • Cartons stay in normal conditions rather than extreme cold or heat

What about natural rubber?

Natural rubber tape has the most aggressive tack and is mostly used for specialty applications. For standard carton sealing, most packers choose between acrylic and hot melt.

Cold storage and produce coolers: be careful

Condensation and low temperatures can defeat the wrong adhesive. A seal that looks perfect at the packing table can lift in the cooler. If your cartons live in cold or damp conditions, tell your supplier exactly where they go: how cold, how long, and whether they get wet. We will recommend tape rated for it.

Thickness, width and length

Adhesive is half the decision. The rest is the tape itself:

  • Width. Standard carton sealing tape is 2 inches wide, with 3 inch rolls for heavier cartons and machine use.
  • Length. Rolls run from about 55 to 110 yards or more. Longer rolls mean fewer roll changes.
  • Thickness. Measured in mil. Light cartons often seal fine with 1.6 to 2 mil tape. Heavier boxes, and those that ship long distances, do better with 2.5 mil or more.

Seal it right: the H-seal method

Good tape still fails if it is applied badly. On heavy boxes, use the H-seal: tape the center seam and both edges so the flaps cannot lift. Extra tape on a failing carton costs far less than a damaged shipment.

Good dispensers also matter. They cut tape cleanly and reduce waste, which can lower your annual tape spend more than a small per-roll discount.

Takeaway checklist: pick your tape

Run through this before you reorder:

Not sure about any of these? Skip it and send us your situation. We will recommend the adhesive and thickness.

  • [ ] Where do the cartons go? (dry warehouse, cooler, cold storage, on ice)
  • [ ] Are the cartons new, recycled or dusty?
  • [ ] Acrylic or hot melt chosen based on the answers above
  • [ ] Carton weight and shipping distance noted for thickness (mil)
  • [ ] Roll width and length selected for hand or machine use
  • [ ] H-seal used on heavy cartons
  • [ ] Dispensers or tape guns checked for clean cuts and low waste
  • [ ] Cases per month calculated

Tape, boxes and labels on one quote

We manufacture labels, so you can order tape, boxes, film and PLU labels together. One supplier, one quote, one shipment, and a partner with more than 40 years in the business.

A simple way to settle it

If you cannot decide, run a short trial. Seal a few cartons with each adhesive, put them where your real cartons live (the cooler, not the office), and check the seams after a day or two and again after a few days. Whichever one stays flat and bonded is your answer. Then tell us what worked, and we will quote it in the volume you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better for cold storage, acrylic or hot melt?

Acrylic holds up better across temperature changes. Hot melt can degrade in cold or very hot conditions, so it is the riskier choice for coolers.

Why does my tape lift off dusty or recycled cartons?

Dusty and recycled surfaces are hard for an adhesive to grip. Hot melt's high initial tack is built for exactly that case, though you should still confirm it holds in your storage conditions.

Does tape thickness matter that much?

Yes. Light cartons often seal fine at 1.6 to 2 mil. Heavier boxes and long routes do better at 2.5 mil or more. Thin tape on a heavy carton is a common cause of popped flaps.

Can I get printed tape?

Yes. Printed and color tape can carry fragile warnings, brand messaging or color coding by order.
