What Size Should PLU Labels Be for Fruit? A Practical Sizing Guide
· 7 min read · By Rob Puzio

There is no single correct size for a PLU label. The right size depends on the fruit, the surface of the skin, the equipment that applies the label, and what your retail buyer requires. Pick wrong and you get labels that crease, lift, or cannot be read at the register. This guide walks through how to decide before you place an order.
Start With the Fruit, Not the Label
Measure the flattest usable area on the fruit. A small citrus fruit gives you much less room than a large mango or melon. The label should sit on a fairly flat area without wrapping around a tight curve.
Pull a sample of the actual fruit from the line, not the biggest piece in the bin. Your labels have to work across the whole size range you pack.
- Small fruit such as limes, kiwi, and plums need compact labels.
- Medium fruit such as apples, pears, and oranges give more room.
- Large fruit such as mangoes, avocados, and melons can take larger labels, but curve and texture matter more.
Consider the Skin Surface
Smooth skin takes a label easily. Waxed, dimpled, fuzzy, or rough skin does not. A label that is too large on a textured surface will not make full contact, and the edges lift.
If your fruit is wet, waxed, or cooled before packing, tell us. Adhesive choice and label size work together, and we can match both to your conditions.
- Smooth skin: more size options.
- Waxed or oily skin: keep labels modest and use the right adhesive.
- Textured or fuzzy skin: smaller labels with strong tack usually hold better.
Match the Size to Your Applicator
Hand application and machine application have different limits. Machines are built around a specific label width, roll core, and liner. If you apply labels by machine, the label has to fit what that equipment feeds. Send us the make and model and we will build the roll to suit.
- Hand application: the most flexibility in size and shape.
- Semi-automatic applicators: size is set by the machine's feed path.
- Inline machines: confirm label width, roll diameter, and core size before ordering.

Round, Oval, or Rectangle
Shape affects both how the label sits and how much information fits on it. Round and oval labels are common on fruit because they follow the curve of the skin and look clean. Rectangles carry more text but have corners that can lift on curved fruit.
If you need room for a PLU number, a country of origin, and a brand name, a slightly larger oval can be a better fit than a small round label crowded with text.
- Round: simple, tidy, suits small and medium fruit.
- Oval: more room for text with a curve-friendly shape.
- Rectangle: most space, best on flatter surfaces.
Leave Room for the PLU Number and Barcode
The PLU number must be easy to read at the register, and any barcode or DataBar must be large enough to scan and have clear space around it. Do not shrink a code just to fit a tiny sticker. A label that cannot be read is worse than no label.
Retailers publish their own labeling rules, so confirm what your buyer expects before you lock in a size. We design with those requirements in mind and send a proof within 24 hours so you can check legibility before anything is printed.
- Keep the PLU number large and high contrast.
- Give barcodes and DataBars their required quiet space.
- Check the retailer's requirements before approving a proof.

Food-Safe Materials Matter at Any Size
Because a PLU sticker touches the fruit, the adhesive should be rated for direct food contact. Our labels use FDA-compliant direct food contact adhesive, and the materials are food safe. Size does not change that requirement, so confirm it with any supplier you compare.
Order Samples and Proof Before a Large Run
The safest way to confirm size is to see it. We are a Florida manufacturer with more than 40 years in the label industry. Frequently Asked Questions
What size should PLU labels be for fruit?
It depends on the fruit, its skin, your applicator, and your retailer. Measure the flattest usable area on the fruit and choose a label that sits flat without wrapping a tight curve.
Should I use round or oval PLU stickers?
Round labels suit small and medium fruit. Oval labels give more room for text while still following the curve of the fruit.
Can I use my existing applicator with custom PLU labels?
Usually yes. Send us the make and model of your applicator and we will build the label and roll to fit it.
Will I see a proof before the labels are printed?
Yes. Proofs go out within 24 hours so you can check size, legibility, and layout before production.
